5 Amazon Prime Day Tips & Tricks

Every year, I look forward to Prime Day as if it were Christmas. Mostly because the deals make it feel like Christmas in July! My first Prime Day was a little overwhelming, there were so many deals and I didn’t know where to begin or what I was really looking for. Since then, I’ve learned a few tricks that I’ll be sharing with you to make your next Prime Day a successful one.

1. Prepare your cart ahead of time

It’s important to make a list of things you want beforehand and even add those things to your cart. It makes checking out easier and helps you avoid falling into the continuous scrolling trap where you end up buying things you don’t need, like a 4kg bag of Reese’s Pieces (that was a terrible example, everyone needs a 4k bag of Reese’s Pieces). Once the items are in your cart, you’re able to quickly see which items are on sale.

2. Be aware of sale trends

It’s important to know what items typically go on sale so you can know what to expect the day of. During Prime Day, a lot of different products go on sale from different departments, but Amazon tends to stick to a few key departments where the sales are more substantial, those are: electronics, Amazon Basics, and small appliances.

3. Keep in mind the additional discounts

There are certain departments where you can save an additional percentage on top of the sale price, like luxury beauty (15%), fashion (30%), furniture (20%), and back to school (15%). Always look for the blue banner located near the price on the product page.

4. Take advantage of lightning deals and upcoming deals

There’s a reason why they’re called lightning deals: if you don’t act fast they’re gone in a flash! These are temporary deals that expire after a specific time period or as soon as the allotted quantity of product has been claimed. These deals are typically the big-ticket items, like TVs or KitchenAid Mixers. You have to act fast with these deals because once you add one of these products to your cart, you have about 15 minutes to check out before it disappears. You can always add it again, but as soon as the deal is 100% claimed, the product will go back to regular price. One way to prepare yourself for these deals is to check the Upcoming Deals tab and “Watch” deals for quick access to them when they go on sale. In this tab, you’ll also find the countdown for when the product will go live as a lightning deal.

5. Pay attention to changing sales

Since Prime Day is a two-day event, they have different sales happening at all times during the two days. That means, if you don’t find what you’re looking for on the first day, you may on the second! Move the product to your Saved for Later and try again in a few hours or the next day.

Over the years, I’ve scored some awesome deals for my home and for my classroom. Below are a few examples of purchases I’ve made during Prime Day, which can give you an idea of what to expect for your next Christmas in July. Happy shopping!
